Top 10 wedding venues in Lancashire

Here are some of the Quirkiest Wedding Venues in the North West. I love them all!

Holmes Mill

Holmes Mill is a unique place to get married due to the rustic charm of the setting. If you want to get married at Holmes Mill, you can choose between two of their venues. The Spinning Block Hotel or The Cotton Room which lends from its original roots as an actual cotton mill. It has exposed beams, creating a cosy and intimate atmosphere for all involved.

Wyresdale Park

If you are looking for a rustic and magical place to hold your wedding, Wyresdale Park is packed full of charm against the backdrop of the Forest of Bowland. If you are looking for quaint accommodation look no further than Wyresdale Park’s own lodges and yurts where you and your guests can even glamp!

The Harris Museum Preston

If you want an artsy, intimate quirky wedding reception, what better place for it to be held than the Harris Museum. The Rotunda is where many wedding receptions have taken place and allow for wonderful views of the building. With its Neo-Classical design the Harris Museum will be a brilliant backdrop for photos to be taken, and in the heart of the city centre too!

30 James Street Liverpool

This wedding venue is perfect if you are looking for a classy and glamorous place to get married. 30 James Street is one of the most iconic buildings in Liverpool and at the heart of the cities maritime history. Constructed between 1896 and 1898 by architects Richard Norman Shaw and J. Francis Doyle, Albion House became the headquarters to the most famous shipping company in the world; White Star Line!!

Bashall Barn

Bashall Barn is perfect for anyone who loves the outdoors. It is one of the most rustic venues I know to get married in in the North West. The venue offers panoramic views of the Ribble Valley –and there is also an outside veranda, and on  a sunny day they will open the doors for the ceremony to take place outside. Alternatively, if you want to hold your ceremony outside, Bashall Barn also have a wonderous woodland specifically for wedding ceremonies.

Ashton Memorial

Ashton Memorial is located in Williamson Park in Lancaster. The beautiful architecture would be a perfect backdrop for wedding photos if you are looking for a venue that is sophisticated and grand and with endless views of the Lake District and Morecambe. A trip in to the butterfly house will also make for some awesome wedding photos!!

The Wellbeing Farm

If you are looking for a quirky and unconventional venue for your wedding, you should consider The Wellbeing Farm. Their venue is fully customisable, they have their own “Prop Store” and they even provide games like tug of war, sack races and they also have space-hoppers for your guests to be entertained! The farm has some furry residents that make it on to the photographs too…what could possibly be more unique than alpacas wearing bowties and donkeys wearing flat caps?!

MAMA...GET IN THE PHOTO

DO YOU WANT BEAUTIFUL PHOTOS OF YOU AND YOUR BABY?

It doesn’t matter how beautiful people say you are, most women are self-conscious when they are being photographed. This is particularly true for new mums and seeing what our bodies go through during pregnancy, of course we understand why. No need to list what part of our bodies we might not feel comfortable with, it’s different for every one of us, but I always encourage new Mums to have their photo taken whilst with me.
I am going to share a little story with you. When I was pregnant with my son, my Mum took plenty of photos of me pregnant and the first few weeks after I had given birth. I hated the photos of how I looked, and I tore them up, now my son doesn’t have any pictures to look back on of us together. Back in the 90’s all photos were on film, so the prints were all you had.
What a shame that I felt like that, because now I would love to look back on those photos, regardless of how I felt I looked. I want to see those first few weeks of me holding my son, even with my bad “Rachel” from friends hair cut!
I now realise how important self-love is for not just you, but your children as well. It might be a long and challenging journey towards loving our new bodies and ourselves in general, and that’s fine, but in the meantime, we need to learn to love who we are, and capture those memories for your children, if not for you.
If you wanted to book a newborn or family session with me and you said “But it’s just for the kids, I don’t want to be in the photos, I would give you the following advice (these can also work for your everyday family snapshots)
If you don’t do it for you, do it for them
Imagine your child in 10 years’ time looking through a family album and not finding any photos of you in it. Now, picture your child looking at a photo of you looking at him/her with a smile on your face and love in your eyes. Which situation do you think will make them feel loved and as part of a family?

You don’t have anything to loose

Getting a picture taken with you in it doesn’t mean you have to print it on a big canvas, hang it in your living room and look at it every day. Chances are you will actually treasure a portrait showing you holding your tiny baby or playing with your child, but if it’s not the case, don’t buy it / print it.

Angles are a powerful way to shift the focus

My job as a professional photographer is to use different angles and crops so that you end up loving a photo with you in it. I want you to fall in love with a portrait capturing your relationship with your baby or child, even if we can’t see your whole body in it.

Just be yourself!

Think of the session as quality time with your family, enjoy the moment and let me do the work. Whether it is a professional photographer like me or your husband taking the photos you can be photographed doing daily activities with your children: feeding, playing, reading a book, etc.

Children love to see pictures of their parents

Reason 1 said that if you didn’t do it for you, you could do it for your children and show them how loved they were. But this is different: our children will love to look at those photos in years to come and will be amazed at how young we looked, what clothes we wore and what activities we used to do with them.

It will send you back in time

Looking at pictures of your children on their own will make you smile and make you proud. Looking at photos of you with your children will bring back the emotions you felt at that particular time of their life and who would not want a time machine?

Capture the family unit

It doesn’t have to be a posed shot of everybody smiling at the camera (it can!) but it is an important photo to have, printed & framed, on the mantel piece.

So please… Whether it’s with me, another professional photographer or your mother, get in front of the camera and enjoy it! Your children will never look at them saying “I wish you waited until you lost a bit more weight” and you might be surprised and actually love and cherish those images years from now.
Also,  get them printed!!
Technology is not always reliable (or like me you might rip the photos up) and those memories are not replaceable. So always backup your photos AND print your favourites so you actually get to look at them.

If you would like to get in touch and book your photos in, please do

Jo x

HOW TO CHOOSE AMAZING BABY NAMES

How to choose amazing baby names

At the end of last year I got a kitten, it took me about a week to name her once I got her, I went from Dusty, to Edie, but finally settled on Nell !!
This got me thinking about baby names, and how hard it is to choose the name once they arrive. You might have your heart set on something  but then the name just doesn’t feel right once they finally arrive, and for a few days your baby might just be called baby!!!

My tips on choosing the right baby name include:

  1. Remember that classic names don’t have to be boring
  2. Take a look at your family tree
  3. Honor your culture
  4. Look up meanings
  5. Contemplate all possible nicknames
  6. Consider the importance of the middle name
  7. Don’t forget about the initials
  8. Say it out loud
  9. Keep it a secret if thats what you and your partner want
  10. Don’t stress too much
Top names for 2020 so far

For now though, the top girls’ name for 2020 is Luna, the name of the Roman moon goddess. This name has raced up the charts since Chrissy Teigen and John Legend chose it for their daughter, it’s got a perfect ancient-yet-unconventional feel for right now.

On the boys’ side, the biblical Asher takes the number 1 spot, knocking last years’ Milo to number 2.

WYRESIDE HALL WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY | SUPER FUN AND COLOURFUL – MOLLY AND SAM

“I CAN’T STOP LOOKING AT THE PHOTOS, I HAVE CRIED HAPPY TEARS AND LAUGHED SO MUCH. YOU MANAGED TO CAPTURE THE WHOLE DAY AND WE HAVE AMAZING PHOTOS TO LOOK AT FOREVER !!”

Molly and Sam got married in the autumn at the gorgeous Wyreside Hall, which is a stunning venue in Scorton. It was such a fun wedding and the sun even made an appearance!

Getting ready

Molly got ready at her parents home in the village All of her bridesmaids and Mum and Dad where there, and the atmosphere was absolutely electric. Dad made tequila for everyone, even Molly necked a shot before she popped her dress on. The wedding party then rode a Rolls Royce to get to the ceremony. Loads of friends from the village gathered outside the local church to watch Molly arrive with her Dad.

The serious part

The ceremony was a beautiful service at the local church. Set in the small village of Scorton, the church is nestled behind the woods and down a long drive, it is a quaint village church, with THE best Vicar in Lancashire. During the ceremony the bridesmaids read a poem they wrote about the couple, very touching and very funny.

The party

The reception was in the main hall at the venue. They chose Wyreside Hall because it’s near their home and they just fell in love with it. It was a colourful and fun wedding, which excited me as I love colour. I love shooting Wyreside Hall weddings because the people are just incredible. Wyreide Hall has amazing views of the Lancashire coast line, you can see all the way up to Cumbria and the Lake District on a clear day.

They Paul Guard in the afternoon, and a photobooth in the evening. Paul got everyone up singing and dancing all afternoon, there was no time for a break, the laughter and guest participation was incredible!! They decorated the venue with so much colour and Jo Malone Candles, because Molly wanted to scent her wedding and the Rose Oud matched the wonderful reds and pinks they had chosen.

The best part of the day was the speeches, because it made everyone laugh. They also had a song during the speeches – it was so much fun! A sing off between the boys and girls with the girls taking the wining baton !!!

The couple

Molly wore Charlotte Mills blue shoes and Sam wore a velvet dinner jacket and they looked so incredible. Molly’s dress was from Lulu Browns and Sam’s buttonhole was made by the wonderfully creative Flower Design.

The couple met at school and have been together for years. They got in touch with me in 2018 and their enquiry was so personal. They said they wanted a fun photographer, and I loved that they just wanted to party.

Molly and Sam’s wedding was such a laugh and totally epic. Here’s their awesome wedding!

THE COTTIERS GLASGOW

LEE & HOLLYS CITY WEDDING

A CRISP WINTERS DAY WEDDING WITH GRAFFITTI & UBER TAXIS

Lee & Holly got married in November at the spectacular Cottiers Theatre Glasgow. This old church has been converted into a community theatre, its dark and moody with stunning windows and a romantic atmosphere.

The excitement before the wedding

Lee got ready at home with the lads, they love in the West End of Glasgow and from their apartment you can see out for miles, the sun was out, but it was absolutely freezing, it made for gorgeous light though!!  Holly was with her bridesmaids and her Mum at the hotel which was a gorgeous Georgian building with dark walls and amazing window light. Holly has to be one of the most laid back brides I have ever worked with, she casually ordered a taxi 5 mins before the ceremony to take us all to the venue so she could say I do!!

The Vows

The ceremony room was DARK!!! However, there were gorgeous fairy lights, and a amazing back light from the theatre set up, this made the photos really capture the atmosphere of the cerement. Hollys Mum walked her down the aisle, and they were both grinning from ear to ear as they entered the room.

After the ceremony

The reception was upstairs at the Cottiers, all the guests were treated to tapas style Scottish delicacies, whilst myself, Lee & Holly grabbed an uber and headed to SGW3 to get some portraits using the amazing street art the area is renowned for. They chose both of the venues as they didn’t want a traditional wedding. City centres are great for weddings as you find little spots and it makes you look at landscapes differently. I love city weddings, and especially street art

The couple

The couple met whilst on skiing trip. Lee is an old friend of mine, and when they got engaged Holly got straight in touch to see if I was free. She said she really loved my style and didn’t want anyone else to shoot their wedding, I felt so humbled. I love shooting friends weddings, as I get the best view in the house, and spend a shit load of time with people I love. What a fantastic job !!

Hollys vision was relaxed, simple and a little bit quirky. Her dress was hand made by a friend, and she went for a 60’s inspired look for her bridesmaids, all wearing green. The lads wore whatever they fancied, so it was a real mix of casual and cool, with Hollys great sense of style.

A Fun Packed HOLMES MILL WEDDING filled with sequins, origami & Feathers!!!

Winter Wedding Holmes Mill.

Becki & Dale got married in November at the spectacular Holmes Mill, which is an industrial old mill in Clitheroe. It was such a fun wedding with a relaxed vibe all day long!

Winter Wedding Holmes Mill

The excitement before the wedding

Becki got ready at Mitton Hall Hotel with her bridesmaids and her Mum, and the atmosphere was buzzing all morning. the music was on and the Prosecco was in hand! Becki hired an old VW campervan from Broughton Wedding Cars to get to the ceremony. Dale got ready at the Spinning Block hotel at Holmes Mill with his Groomsmen. Dale walked to the ceremony room in the beer hall and was warmly welcomed by all the guests. The ceremony room looked bloody amazing the team from Wildfire Floral Co had dressed the aisle and put up a wedding arch covered in the most amazing flowers and feathers, its looked incredible.

The Vows

The ceremony was beautiful.

Becki opted to walk by herself down the aisle after her sequined bridesmaids. Dale was clearly moved by the first sight of Becki, he shed a few tears as she walked towards him.

After the ceremony

The reception was in the Engine room and they had a rockabilly band playing whilst personalised IPA with Dales face on the bottle was handed out along with lots of glasses of prosecco. They chose Holmes Mill because it had the industrial look they were after, and felt very relaxed. It was a Autumn wedding, which I love because Autumn is my favourite time of the year. The light you get throughout the day is just perfect. I love shooting Holmes Mill weddings because the photo opportunities are endless. I can’t get enough of shooting indoors at this venue, think rustic walls, natural light, and vibrant wallpaper. The engine room has to be one of my favourite indoor shots of all time!!

The couple

Becki & Dale met at Manchester United where they both worked.

Becki got in touch in 2018 after they had visited Holmes Mill, I had been recommended by the venue. Becki had a vision and I completely fell in love with it. We chatted over the phone and then  she booked me. They said they wanted a photographer who would be like a guest, and I loved that they just wanted to celebrate and have a party.

The Mere Cheshire Wedding Photography

Jess and Jake got married in August at the Mere Cheshire, which is a stunning golf venue in Cheshire. It was the most beautiful wedding and the sun even made an appearance!

The excitement before the wedding

Jess got ready in the bridal suite with all her bridesmaids and her Mum, the atmosphere was so energetic, with lots of prosecco and laughter all morning. There was a big reveal to the bridesmaids and then Jess’ Dad, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house!!

Jake got ready in the room next door, not big enough to swing a cat in, but to be fair the room was buzzing, at one point there were about 15 people all crammed in, listening to music and sampling IPA from Jakes mate who owns Hip Hop Beershop!!

The ceremony

The ceremony was a beautiful service in the main hall. During the ceremony they had a couple of readings from Jess & Jakes brother and sister. It was so emotional and a beautiful way of involving everyone in the ceremony.

Jake admitted his favourite art of the day was watching Jess walk down the aisle, they were both so emotional, with Jess having to dry her tears at the altar, it was super cute to see two people so happy and in love.

After the ceremony it stopped raining just as the couple walked down the aisle, so it was straight outside for a huge confetti throw.

For dinner they served proper wedding grub, which was gobbled down in seconds by everyone. Jess’ Dad had everyone roaring with laughter from the start, to the end of his speech. Jake made a very emotional tribute which had many people in tears, and then the main event, the Best Man incorporated crowd participation. It was a wonderful set of speeches which really encapsulated the day. The first dance involved busting a move to Sam Smith, Jess’ Grandma got on the dance floor and she was set for the night, and everyone bounced around full of Jagerbombs dancing to the band!!

The couple

The couple met years ago. Jake finally proposed when they were travelling in Bali. He took Jess for a candle lit dinner, and had the staff in on the secret. Whilst they were posing for “more” photos, Jake popped the question, and all the while the staff were taking photos of the proposal taking place. When they got in touch with me, Jess said they wanted a relaxed photographer, and I loved that they just really wanted me there. The day was amazing, filled with fun, love and laughter all the way through.

Jess and Jakes’s wedding was just the happiest occasion and had such a fun atmosphere. Here’s their gorgeous wedding!

A rainy day wedding in Yorkshire

Anne and Tom got married in July at the spectacular Standedge Tunnel, which is a quirky venue in Huddersfield. It was one of the most fun weddings I’ve shot and even the rain didn’t dampen the day!

Getting ready

Anne got ready a small barn close to Standegde Tunnel. All her bridesmaids had made the trip from Amsterdam to be with her, and the atmosphere was so calm. The wedding party then took A canal barge to get to the ceremony. A few logistics to get the bridal party safely on to the barge, and away we were. Tom got ready across the village with the groomsmen. He travelled to Standedge Tunnel with the whole wedding party on the barge too.

The ceremony

The ceremony was an intimate affair in the main hall. This was a DIY wedding and the bride and bridesmaids along with the lads had spent the previous day decorating the venue. During the ceremony they had family and friends perform orchestral music on their violins. It was one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard, an absolute show stopper. It was so unique and a beautiful way of involving everyone in the ceremony.

After the ceremony

The reception was in a private room at the venue. They chose Standedge Tunnel because its so quirky and they just fell in love with it. It was a a big wedding, which included their nearest and dearest and friends who had travelled across the world to enjoy their special day. I love shooting quirky weddings because the surroundings are so unusual.

The couple met whilst travelling in China and have been together for years. They got in touch with me when I was shooting on behalf of Claire Basi Uk and their enquiry sounded perfect for me. They said they didn’t care about anything except having an epic party, and I loved that they just wanted to party and eat cake. The day was perfect, despite the persistent rain. The speeches were hilarious and they ended their amazing day with a great live band and loads of dancing!!

The couple says that if you’re planning your wedding, the biggest piece of advice they could give you is find a fantastic wedding venue, the quirkier the better.

Anne and Tom’s wedding was everything I love about weddings and just the happiest occasion. Here’s their wonderful wedding!
